Our RYA training centre in Southampton is the ideal location to complete an RYA shorebased course. We provide the full range of RYA courses using the latest equipment to enable you to get hands-on experience with modern electronics as well as the traditional chartwork.

All our RYA shorebased courses are inclusive of refreshments and free secure parking throughout the course. Accommodation can be arranged either in a local hotel or on board a training yacht for the complete nautical experience.

RYA Practical Sailing Courses

RYA Day Skipper Theory
Course Content
This is a beginner's course, which assumes no prior experience and is intended to be both enjoyable and informative. It introduces basic navigation, including chartwork, position fixing, tides, buoyage, and passage planning as well as the essential subjects of safety and meteorology. The course is equally suited to both sail and powerboat users. With the increasing use of modern electronic aids to navigation, an introduction to the safe use of G.P.S. is also included. The course is essential preparation for the RYA Day Skipper Practical Course.

RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Theory
Course Content
This is an advanced course which assumes prior completion of the RYA Day Skipper course or the equivalent knowledge and is intended to be both. It develops more advanced navigation, including chart work, position fixing, tides, buoyage, and offshore passage planning as well as the essential subjects of safety, International Regulations for Preventing Collision at Sea and meteorology. With the increasing use of modern electronic aids to navigation, the use of G.P.S. is also included. This course is equally suited to both sail and powerboat users and is essential preparation for the RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Course or the Yachtmaster Examination.
Previous Experience
Knowledge of navigation up to RYA Day Skipper level.

RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory
Course Content
This is an advanced course, which assumes prior completion of the RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster course or the equivalent experience and is intended to be both enjoyable and informative. It covers Celestial navigation, use of the Sextant, navigation tables, the Nautical Almanac and ocean passage planning as well as the essential subjects of safety, ocean meteorology and routeing. The course is equally suited to both sail and powerboat users. With the increasing use of modern electronic aids to navigation, the use of G.P.S. is also included. This course is essential preparation for a qualifying passage for the Yachtmaster Ocean Examination.

Knowledge of navigation up to RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Theory.

VHF Radio Short Range Certificate
Course Content
This course covers both the training and examination for the VHF Radio Short Range Certificate and covers the use of a VHF Radio equipped with Digital Selective Calling (DSC). This replaces the previous VHF Radio Operators Certificate and is part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). All VHF Radio users need to obtain this certificate to operate their radios safely and legally!

RYA Diesel Engine
Course Content
This one day RYA Diesel Engine course is designed to prevent you breaking down at sea, but if you have mechanical problems this course will teach you how to go about getting started again.
The course is equally suited to the sailor with auxiliary diesel and the motor cruising enthusiast.

RYA Radar
Course Content
This one day course is becoming increasingly popular on both sailing and motor boats, radar is an invaluable aid for navigation and collision avoidance, but is only useful if you know how to use it. This course provides a hands-on introduction to setting up and using a radar effectively.

RYA / MCA Small Craft Sea Survival
Course Content
This one day course includes a two hour practical session in the pool with a liferaft; plus some classroom teaching covering a wide range of other survival issues including search and rescue. We hope that you will never need to use the skills learnt on this course but strongly believe that with some training you will be better prepared and will help to preserve life in emergency. It is a well proven fact that in the event of an emergency at sea, people who have received training are more likely to survive. This course is one of the requirements needed to become commercially endorsed.

RYA First Aid
Course Content
This is a beginner's course, which assumes no prior experience and is intended to be both enjoyable and informative. It introduces basic first aid techniques especially suited to problems that may occur on board a yacht or motor cruiser such as resuscitation and maintenance of victims of "man over board" as well as the usual cuts breaks and sprains that we can all suffer in rougher weather. The course is equally suited to both sail and powerboat users.
